1898 Hat Knitting – Created by Kristine Byrnes. Knit a free beanie pattern for women, men, and children.

I discovered this free pattern last year. I first knit this model for my partner. However, I quickly claimed it for myself! When I went for winter walks, my ears were always cold. But with this one… never again! I knit a second one this year, so I could give him back his own. In conclusion, this beanie is perfect for the whole family.

According to the designer, this hat’s construction is inspired by one illustrated in a magazine published around 1910. The headband is knit first from side to side in garter stitch. The method used to knit the headband creates a double thickness to keep ears warm and allows for easy shaping of the earflaps. The edges of the headband are folded together along a seam and knit together to finish in the round. The hat has plenty of depth to be worn low on the forehead, and the earflaps will naturally wrap around the ears.

Gauge:

20 sts and 24 rows / 4″ in stockinette stitch,

20 sts and 36 rows / 4″ in garter stitch.

Recommended needle size in the pattern: 4.5 or 5 mm

Yarn used: Flocon

Note: For this free beanie knitting pattern for women and men ( here ), I had to go down to 3.5 mm needles for the garter stitch gauge. This free pattern comes in only one size, but it is very easy to adapt. Check as you knit the headband. It is knit flat, so hold it up to your head regularly and lengthen or shorten as needed.
